On 13th July 2013, WATOTO AFRIKA organised their first African festival in Petralona, Athens at the Kolokotroni Square. There were some stands which displayed African arts and crafts ranging from (image) handmade beadwork to footwear and textiles. Some stands displayed some beautiful traditional and colourful ornaments and handicrafts. Also, the visitors had a chance to taste some of the most delicious African dishes, many of which were prepared on the spot.
(image) As for entertainment, there were several groups performing and the four corners of Africa: north, east, south and west, were well represented. A representative from the town council made the opening speech to welcome us all and congratulated the organisers on their initiative. The square was packed with hundreds of eager festival goers of all ages, some of whom had never had such an experience, especially in their local area.
Around midnight, once all the organised performances had finished, the audience were invited on stage to learn some African dance steps and soon afterwards, young and old were dancing to the rhythms of Africa. For many, it was a night to remember, and they were promised that more such events would follow.
The Botanic Gardens, Petroupoli
Among the audience in the festival in Petralona, there were some people from Petroupoli who asked WATOTO AFRIKA (image) to hold a similar event in the Botanic Gardens. The festival took place on 21st September 2013 and was again a great success. Since then WATOTO AFRIKA has organised and held several other festivals and events. However, WATOTO AFRIKA has also taken part in many other events and festivals organised by others, including the anti-racist festival and the African festival organised by the African embassies in Athens, both held annually.(image)
